PGA Wells Fargo Championship 2022

As we expected, the Mexico Open last week was Mickey Mouse-esque. The massive favorite, Jon Rahm, led the tournament start to finish to seal his 7th PGA tour victory and his first since the 2021 US open. Congrats, Rahmbo.

The key players we were eyeing at the Mexico Open last week all made the cut. Cameron Champ had the best finish at T6.

We’re now onto the Wells Fargo Championship:

Normally held in Charlotte, North Carolina at Quail Hollow, the 2022 Wells Fargo will be held outside North Carolina for the first time since the tournament debut in 2003. Due to preparations for the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow. This year the tour will be stopping at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms in Potomac, Maryland for the first time since the 2018 Quicken Loans National. TPC Potomac’s extensive redesigned championship course in 2008 featured a drastically different layout with bentgrass tees, fairways and greens, fescue and Scottish-style bunkering.  Less than 20 miles from the nation’s capital the course ambles over pristine wooded terrain, with numerous creeks, where the course earns its name (Potomac River).

TPC Potomac will play at 7,160 yards for the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship. A par 70, with only two par 5’s, both difficult to reach in two, TPC Potomac is a course that will reward precision off the tee combined with a stellar approach game due to it’s smaller greens. We will look at par 4 scoring as a key stat this week, the best scoring par 4 opportunity is the drive-able 14th which will only play about 299 yards. Outside of the 14th, eight (8) of the par 4’s will play over 440 yards, adding an extra emphasis on the long irons. Proximity from 175-200 will serve as a key stat we are eyeing this week. The course is expected to play difficult, penal rough along with hazards off the fairways adding to extra emphasis to driving accuracy.
